"Where could he have gone?" Sita said to
herself. "I've looked everywhere for him....."
She lay down on the floor of her room,
and sighed. She felt confused and discouraged, and lonely. Nanaki seemed
uncomfortable when she was around him. She figured he was just being shy,
but she couldn't really be sure.
But...... I act just as shy around him.
Come to think of it, I've kinda been avoiding him because of it.....maybe
I hurt his feelings. Maybe we're just too different....maybe I should have
just stayed in the mountains with Grandpa!
"I'm going to go and find him. I can't
be shy forever," she said, determinedly.
She found him, sitting on top of the observatory,
reading a book. He turned his head, watching her struggle up the ladder.
"Tough climb...." she said breathlessly,
her tail hanging limply.
"Yeah...." Nanaki said. "Do you need any
help?
She shook her head. "I'm okay." Sita padded
over towards him, and sat down. "What are you doing up here?" she asked,
trying to start a conversation.
"Just reading," he said, closing the book.
"Were you looking for me?"
"Yeah," she said. "I just wanted to talk."
"Oh, okay," he replied, sounding uncomfortable.
"What about?"
"Well....... we could talk about anything,"
Sita suggested.
"Sure," he said. There was a long, awkward
silence, each one waiting for the other to start.
"Um....well......nice view, huh?" he started.
"Yeah, it is.....nice...." Sita trailed
off.
There was another long pause.
"So, how do you like the town so far?"
Nanaki asked hopefully.
"It's great," she answered simply. "I like
it a lot."
"Thank you. I'm glad you like it here,"
he said.
"Nanaki....do you feel uncomfortable around
me?" she asked, forgetting small talk.
"No.....not really. I'm just not used to
being around girls." He smiled. "Of the same species, I mean."
She laughed, and rested her head on his
shoulder. She didn't feel so nervous around him anymore, knowing how he
felt. "It's good to know that you feel the same way I do."
"You sure don't act shy around me," Nanaki
said, tilting his head slightly.
"I felt shy, though. It seemed like you
hadn't forgiven me," Sita sighed. "So I stayed away from you. I'm so confused....this
is so different from the way it used to be."
"What do you mean?" he asked.
"Different....like living with a person
I taught myself to hate...." She looked into his eye. "I can't stop thinking
about the things I've said...."
"You think you can't ever be forgiven, right?"
He closed his eye. "That's just the way I felt. Do you want to hear about
it?"
"Okay," Sita replied.
"I believed my father, Seto, was a cowardly
traitor. I was wrong......he saved all of our lives, at the cost of his
own. When I learned the truth, I knew nobody would ever forgive me, but
they did. I know....that if Seto was alive today, he would have forgiven
me too." He sat up proudly, his tail swishing back and forth.
Sita nuzzled his cheek. "Thank you.....that
makes me feel better. I just....I just hope that Sankao and Kigori can
forgive me too, wherever they are."
"I know it," Nanaki said. "I know they
have."
The End
